English
At Ark Bentworth Primary, we believe that reading and writing are the foundation for lifelong learning and opportunity. Our English curriculum is designed to inspire imagination, foster a love of literacy, and nurture the readers, writers, poets, journalists, scientists, and historians of the future.
Reading at Ark Bentworth
We want our children to develop both a love of books and the skills needed to become fluent, expressive readers. From the very start of school, pupils follow the Read Write Inc. synthetic phonics programme to secure strong early reading skills. As they progress, children encounter a rich variety of carefully chosen texts that challenge and inspire them—building their understanding of different genres, broadening their vocabulary, and developing their comprehension. By the time they reach Year 6, pupils are confident readers who can analyse, interpret, and enjoy literature at greater depth.
Writing at Ark Bentworth
Our Writing Curriculum encourages pupils to see themselves as authors with a voice and purpose. Through exposure to high-quality texts across the curriculum, children explore different genres and audiences, developing an awareness of how language, grammar, and structure work together to create meaning. Writing is taught with a clear progression in handwriting, spelling, grammar, and composition, enabling pupils to become precise and confident communicators. We want our children to write not only with accuracy, but also with creativity, imagination, and flair.
Our approach
- Clear progression: Skills and knowledge build year on year, so pupils can make meaningful connections across reading and writing.
- Purpose and audience: Children learn to adapt their style for different contexts—whether writing a story, a scientific explanation, or a persuasive letter.
- Inspiration through literature: Carefully selected texts support learning across subjects and help children develop empathy, critical thinking, and curiosity.
As Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” At Ark Bentworth, we want every child to leave our school with a love of reading, the confidence to write with purpose, and the skills to succeed in whatever future they choose.
